Prema’s fight for justice
Prema’s courage to speak out helped break silence and strengthen community support for survivors of violence.
At just thirteen, Prema’s (pseudonym) world changed after she experienced physical abuse while staying at her paternal uncle’s house. When she spoke about what had happened, her family initially struggled to accept her account. But her mother chose to raise the issue during a gender-based violence (GBV) awareness session organised in June 2024 under the project initiative.
Nabolok responded quickly, connecting the family with the Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) and facilitating legal support through the Khulna Judge Court. With guidance, the family continued to pursue the case despite significant social pressure. Although the court did not ultimately rule in her favour, Prema’s experience helped open necessary conversations within her community. Today, she lives with her maternal relatives and continues her education.
By integrating GBV awareness, reporting mechanisms, referral pathways, and legal support, the project helped strengthen protection systems at the community level. Prema’s courage is a reminder that even when justice remains incomplete, access to support can break silence, challenge stigma, and encourage other girls to speak up for their rights.
